So, you want to get a pet snake. That’s a big decision! Many people, when it comes time to choose a pet, usually go for the “safe” route and choose a dog, cat, or even a fish. But not you. A snake is the type of pet you’ve set your sights on. Before you go out and buy the first snake you see at the pet store, here are a few things to keep in mind.
1. If this is your first snake, don’t go for a Burmese python or a red-tailed boa. Without the proper care, these kinds of snakes can actually be very dangerous. They are also very large in size, so you’ll want to be more experienced with snakes before you go this route.
2. Get a snake from a pet store. If you try to catch a snake in the wild, especially a water snake, your pet likely won’t live long. Many snakes caught in the wild are prone to illness. You’re better off going to the pet store for your new snake.
3. For a pet, get a corn snake. Corn snakes are great if you are looking to get an exotic snake. Corn snakes easily adapt to new environments and don’t get really big, so they are easier to take care of and feed.
4. You could also get a king snake. If the corn snake isn’t your style, then get a king snake. This snake can be trained and doesn’t have a lot of special requirements.
Exotic snakes tend to be very expensive to buy and care for. Before you head out and drop a bunch of cash on a snake, be sure you have the financial means to get the proper food and cage for your new pet. Don’t get a snake just because it’s the “thing” to do. You have to be prepared for your new pet.
